ENTS:
I had a couple of hours today to check out one of the coves
above the
Cold river in MTSF. The area is on the north face of an unnamed
hill
across the Cold River from Clark mountain. The slope of the hill
is
very steep. This particular cove had an unusual concentration of
mature
yellow birch, mixed with some nice but not super sugar maple and
white
ash. One of the yellow birch exceeded 100' in height. Also in
the mix
were red maple, a lone bitternut hickory, paper birch, black
birch and a
few hemlock. I noticed some striped maple in the understory,
otherwise
it was mostly open, with ferns and boulders aplenty. Here is a
list:
species height
CBH
Yellow Birch 101.3
5.9
Yellow Birch 99.7
3.9
Yellow Birch 98.7
5.3
Yellow Birch 95.3
5.9
White Ash 123.9 4.2?
White Ash 123.6 6.2
White Ash 121.2 5.7
Sugar Maple 115.9 6.2
Sugar Maple 113.3 7.2
Sugar Maple 111.9 5.7
Eastern Hemlock 114.7
8.0
Bitternut Hickory 111.9 4.2
I did not make it all that high up the slope. There are several
drainage areas on this peak, that continue up several hundred
feet. The
hillside, apart from the drainages seems to be less distinctive.

Bob:
The cove I was in was a few hundred
yards west of the Florida town
line, and east of the long parking area by the river. It is not
the one
across from the picnic area.
