Today Monica and I drove through MTSF on our way to a concert at
Williamstown. We stopped for a short hike and I measured a white
pine up the Cold River that is in a small grove on the side of Route
#2. I had last measured the tree back in April 2003. The changes in
dimensions and volume are shown below.

The tree is not in an ideal growing location, but was still able
to increase its volume by almost 5 cubic feet per year. The volume
growth data on the Mohawk Pines continues to accumulate. Most of the
volume calculations I have nade show increases between 5 and 10
cubes with a few trees exceeding 10.

Bob,
Mentioning White Pine, I found a huge one in Fletcher Park yesterday
while walking the trails with Joy. It looked between 11 and 12 feet
in
girth ( single trunked ) and 80 to 100 feet tall. I did not have my
measuring stuff with me to measure the tree so I will go back in the
near future to measure it. Pinus Strobus is one of my favorite
trees,
along with the American Chestnut and Hawthorn.

James,
I'll soon be putting together the annual report to DCR on the
activities of FMTSF. There will be tons of white pine data in it.
I'll send Ed a copy for access via the web.
As BVP might say, the great whites rule.
