ENTS:

John Knuerr and I had reason to visit Stockbridge, MA today. We visited Laurel Hill and measured a couple of beautiful white oaks in the 105-foot height range. A full report tomorrow. The big confirmation was of a Norway spruce at behind a house on the main street through Stockbridge, It is 127.0 feet in height and approximately 8.5 feet in circumference. The tree is in a yard behind a fence, so we couldn't confirm its circumference, but measurement of a white pine of comparable girth gave us confidence in our estimate.

This great Norway opens the door to finding a number in this height range within the southwestern MA area.  It becomes the second Norway to be measured to 127 feet.
Altogether, we've measured 8 Norways in Mass to over 120 feet: 6 in
MTSF, 1 in Egremont, and 1 in Stockbridge. I have high hopes of
eventually finding a 130-footer. I was ambivalent toward Norway spruces
for a long time, but have become an unabased fan of the species. WAY
COOL! Will thinks Norways are way cool also.
