Hello native tree folks,
I was scouting a wooded area along the Charles River in Newton,
Mass. late
this afternoon and came across an Eastern Cottonwood with a dbh
of 48". At
chest height it is 50"+ but the trunk was starting to flare
so I took the
48" measurement at head height (dhh?) :-) The tree is
healthy looking and
has excellent height. I think it is the tallest wild deciduous
tree that
I've looked at in my immediate area. It appears comparable in
height to the
large Silver Maple in the Arnold Arboretum (on the left just
past the
visitor center). If anyone is interested in doing more thorough
measurements let me know, I'd be glad to show you the
tree.

Andrew,
You bet. I'm interested in seeing that tree.
When I return for the
Arkansas conference, I'll give you a call. I'm in Holyoke, so
the
distance isn't that much. Just need to schedule a time.
I have a database of eastern cottonwoods and
your tree has GOT to go
into it.
