Howdy
- long time, no ENTS as they say. I doubt my occasionally
opinionated attitude was missed, but I missed the list.
Has anyone spent anytime on little or (big) Watatic mountain in
Ashburnham, MA near / on the NH line? I've come across an
interesting
though small (25 acres?) of windblown red oak-white oak / talus
woodlands (acidic rocky summits) on little Watatic, very much
like what
was documented by Foster on Wachusett to the southeast. Birch,
white ash
and hophornbeam pick on on the southeast and more vertically
protected
areas. Has anyone done any aging in this area? Small, but big
enough
to spend 5 to 6 hours slowly wandering.

Kevin,
That's interesting. I cruised Mt.Watatic about 8 years ago for
the previous
owner who wanted to restore the former ski area to its former
glory. It
looked like the entire area had been high-graded repeatedly. I
am not
familiar with Little Watatic. It looks to be fairly isolated in
Ashburnham
State Forest. Maybe in the spring, I'll take a bushwhack through
there.
Thanks for the info.
