Howland Cemetery Pines Conway MA   Jeff :LaCoy
  January 28, 2009
Well, day off yet again, and figured after a lackluster hunt for big
trees last week I'd go check out some pines at a local cemetery I
recalled from years ago being fairly sizeable. So amidst the snow this
morning, I figured I'd at least shoot a few from the car and get a
rough idea of whether they were worth returning for. After shooting 2
and having them both come up in the 130's, I figured sure I'll be back
at some point to measure the rest of them, being about 8 or 9 total in
the cemetery. I couldnt resist though, and after shooting the two in
my car, figured I'd huff it up the hill through the snow in my
sneakers to at least measure the trunks so I'd have something to
report back on. The two I measured came up over 10 and 11' in
circumference, and seeing the other several up close, realized it was
time to run back to the car to throw my snow boots on.

All the trees save for one are true single leaders, no questions about
it. There is one however that could possibly be a close judgement
call, and based on Bobs "pith test" as he calls it, it could go either
way. I lean towards a single tree, but could likely be a fuse. Only
reason I mention is because it measured out at 16.2' CBH!! I'll get
pictures of the site when the weather is a bit more agreeable. Shot
one Norway Spruce as well, just to see.....

My numbers come up as follows:

Species   Height   Circumference

WP          152.7    10.3'
WP          138.4    14.4'
WP          134       10.3'
WP          132.9    11.3'
WP          125.8    12.4'
WP          120.8    11.4'
WP          119.4    16.2'
NS           106.1    N/A

The 16 and 12' CBH trees were both likely taller a month ago before
the ice storms. Both trees were side by side, had no discernible
central leader, and had quite a large amount of brush buried in the
snow beneath them, I'm guessing they both lost tops from the ice.

Several of these trees could quite possibly be 4-5' taller in actual
height, the snow was coming down pretty good and I didnt spend much
time verifying whether I was shooting the absolute tallest points of
the trees, just what I quickly decided on as a high point. Not bad for
an impromptu measuring! :)
