ENTS,

This morning, I walked up Broad Brook to check on the huge double pine that grows about half a mile from our home. A series of thunderstorms with high winds have hit various spots in the area over the last couple of months and I wanted to see how the big double had faired. I was relieved to see that it appeared untouched. I measured it and its height is now 136.5 feet, which puts it into a very select group of white pines in the Connecticut River Valley region. So far, in the valley, I've only measured 3 great whites that are taller than the big double. A white pine in Mount Tom State Reservation is between 138.5 and 139 feet. A pine on Smith College campus is about 138.5 feet as is a pine in Easthampton.
Eventually I expect to measure a great white that reaches 140 in the valley. But beyond one or two, it is very clear to me that we will need a few decades of uninterrupted growth in the more promising stands to register a sizable number of 140s. One-forties are not likely to happen on most private land, but there is enough state land and land owned by organizations like the Trustees of Reservations and Mass Audubon to provide us with good hunting.
Tomorrow I do another program for Robinson State Park, but remeasuring any of the tall tulips will have to await fall. It is virtually impossible to find vantage points. The area containing the tulips is like a jungle.

Bob-
How do you suppose the 'big double' would compare in volume versus the three taller CRV pines?

Don,

It is much larger. The combined girth of the double is 14.8 feet.

A pretty compelling reason to include doubles in champion tree categories...
