Dear ENTS,
I just want to share a quick email about one of my favorite times of
the year in the southern Appalachian Mountains. The attached pic, a
low
quality as it is, is one of my favorite scenes in the southern
forest.
The forest is still primarily bare, though the understory is quickly
filling with /Trillium/, violets, cohosh, dogwood, etc., etc. Yet,
the
Fraser Magnolia puts out a large, cream-colored flower to signal to
us
that, despite snowflakes yesterday, there is no turning back. Spring
in
the southern Appalachian Mountains is on!

Neil,
Yes, spring is wonderful here in the Southern Appalachians. I went
hiking a little yesterday and noticed green peeking out everywhere.
Mayapple, Trillium and various other plants are greening up the
forest
floor. Have you ever seen yellow wild violets? Green River game
Lands
has them as well as Pisgah National Forest. Yes, those Fraser
Magnolia
are wonderful trees. Flowers in spring. Big beautiful green leaves
in
summer turning yellow in fall.
Where do you reside? I am in Hendersonville NC.
