ENTS,

I got this email from a friend of mine and I thought
that this might be of interest to some of you all
though I don't recall anyone ever bringing up Japanese
beetles before. Does anyone have any ideas or opions
as to if this will work or not?

I have downloaded two pictures of this tree taken June
of 2006.

Beth

-----------------------------------------

Each summer for the past three years, Japanese
beetles have inflicted heavy damage on the historic
hawthorn tree (and others) at Wayside Park. This
tree is only a few points short of being the Illinois
State Champion for its species (Crataegus mollis), and
it was part of the first highway beautification
project in Illinois. Our Menard Trails and Greenways
organization has been given permission by IDOT to try
to protect the tree with insecticide this year.
Dr. Fredric Miller from the Morton Arboretum has
volunteered to do an experimental treatment with
Acephate as a basal soil drench to see if that will
prevent the damage from happening again this year. The
insecticide is being donated by Rainbow Treecare
Scientific and the work will be done by Fred at no
cost to Menard Trails and Greenways or to IDOT.

If you would like to witness this event, please come
to Wayside Park at 10:30 Wednesday, 2 July. Fred will
arrive to treat the tree between 10:30 and 11:00. We
also expect to have Board-Certified Master Arborist
Guy Meilleur from North Carolina present, and the two
experts will be available to answer questions about
the Japanese beetle problem or other
insect/tree-related issues.

Beth,

The idea sounds interesting, but it is outside my area of knowledge. I am curious about the large Hawthorn (Crataegus mollis) mentioned from the park. Have you measured the tree? From this view it looks like it is a single stem. It should be measured at 4.5 feet on each of its stems, and also below the split and the height noted. It says it was planted as part of the first highway beautification project in Illinois. When was the tree planted? I am just wondering under these conditions how long it took for the tree to grow to its present size. By the way, in what city is Wayside Park?

Ed & Beth,

That is one heck of a Hawthorn! I think it may be a bit bigger than
the ones I have measured. Impressive!
