Looks like they changed things up a little since I was there in '94.
Seems to me you could get closer to the tree when I stopped by.

Assuming this photo was taken after all those FL hurricanes in one
season 2 or 3 years back, the Senator looks to still be in decent
shape. I was wondering how it fared during those storms.

I have never seen another bald cypress as impressive as the Senator.
When I first saw it, it instantly reminded me of the giant sequoias,
on a smaller scale, of course. At one time, I think there were a
couple of other big cypress in that park, besides the one still
standing right down from the Senator.

To think it is still not recognized by the AF as the real cypress
champ is a joke.

Gary,

Yes, we agree. American Forests has yet to get it right. They are prisoners of their compromise formula.

Gary,

I totally agree with you on the AF oversight. In fact, AF offered to hire me
to climb the two contending champions (Senator and the Cat Island twin) to
determine the "true champion". I replied, denying payment, that I already
knew, the Senator is WAY bigger. Besides, the Cat Island tree was a twin. Of
course, they stuck to their "rules" and the Senator stands uncrowned (but
not unappreciated). In hindsight I should have taken the offer just to be
able to climb the two (three) trees and get volume measurements. However
they had a one week time period to get it done!

I was there in fall of last year and the other cypress and the Senator were
just fine. The stitched photo is from my parent's trip early summer 2007.
Those trees have scoffed at many hurricanes!

I took several dozen megabytes of photos of the trees in the park but my
laptop on which they were transferred was stolen right after the trip so I
don't have any better shots.
