Another Big White Pine, NB Mike Kowalski
March 10, 2009

ENTS,

As promised, here are a few photos of one of the biggest white pines
that I've been able to find near Grand Lake, New Brunswick. Also
attached are a few photos of the surroundings to give you an idea of
what the forest in the area looks like. Note that there is currently
about 2 - 3 feet of snow on the ground, so the base of the tree is
obscured. I've measured this tree a couple times during the summer and
fall and got a CBH of 354 cm (139.4 inch). It's an amazing tree to be
around and has some nice old growth characteristics. As far as I can
tell there are a total of 8 "trunks" - 5 of which are reiterations,
and the other 3 appear to be from 2 bifurcations. I still have yet to
get properly equipped with a clinometer and rangefinder, so I can't
provide any more data than that at the moment. I hope to try climbing
this tree when the weather gets a bit warmer.

Mike
