| 1. Searching for and confirming the
150-foot class white pines is time consuming. |
|
|
|
| There are many candidate sites, but
the vast majority prove not to grow white
|
|
|
|
| pines in the 150-foot class. So,
isolating the potentially good sites is necessary. |
|
|
|
| This is currently done by word of
mouth, by searching areas near known |
|
|
|
| stands, by literature searches, and by
blind luck. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| 2. The measurement methodology must be
exacting. The popular percent slope method of |
|
|
| measuring tree height cannot be
applied. Lasers and clinometers are required and the use |
|
|
| of sine-based trigonometry is an
absolute must. This precludes us from using measurements |
|
| from other sources. The search is
an Eastern Native Tree Society mission that cannot be |
|
|
| shared. This could change in the future if others adopt ENTS methods. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| 3. Where might the best remaining places
to look be? Pennsylvania has many possibilities. |
|
|
| There are probably a half dozen, if
not more, sites in the Adirondacks that will prove to have |
|
| a few 150-foot pines. There is likely
one site in Maine. Our current estimate of 150-footers in |
|
|
| the Northeast is 400. Massachusetts
will play an even larger role in the 150-footers in the |
|
|
| future because there are
approximately 50 pines in Mohawk that are between 145 and 149.9 feet |
|
| in height. Barring blowdown, there
should be close to 130 white pines in the 150-foot class |
|
|
| by 2012 |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| 4. The main conclusion that can be drawn
from research to date is that the "Indian Pines |
|
|
| of Mohawk Trail State Forest"
represent a rare natural resource. To some visitors, the pines seem |
|
| out of place in populous
Massachusetts. However, in fact, the pines are a legitimate genuine |
|
| symbol of our natural heritage and
are one of the very few examples of Bay State trees that |
|
| represent the pinnacle of species
development. |
